Greece did not choose to go to war in 1940. She would have much preferred to stay out of the war remaining as close to Britain as her status of non-belligerence would permit, but nourished no illusions about her fate once she got in the way of Axis plans. In contrast to what had happened in the First World War, this time there was no soul-searching among Greeks as to which side to choose. They were overwhelmingly pro-British, no matter what their politics.
